In lieu of a traditional research paper, I decided to configure my final project into a series of blog posts. Each post acts as a diary entry of sorts, and they are told through the point of view of a fictional soldier fighting on behalf of the Republic during the Spanish Civil War. Although James, the fictional character I have created, never existed, his story is based off of the real-life soldiers who fought in the war. I was fortunate enough to be able to research these men with the help of a number of sources, most notably Carl Geiser’s Prisoners of the Good Fight. Through this book I learned about the first-hand experiences and perspectives of Carl and his comrades in the Abraham Lincoln Brigade, as well as what it was like to be a prisoner of war. My hope is that by telling this story through James, readers will be left with a greater knowledge of life behind fascist lines, and sense of what it meant to be a soldier fighting in this brutal war.
